Learn About The Climate in the Grasslands
Tropical-grassland Savanna :
Here we explore what the climate of the African Safari is like. The Tropical-grasslands has a very hot and dry climate for part of the year. In the wet season the climate of this grassland is warm, allowing moist air from the equator to move in. After this, a cooler dry season moves into the grasslands, this usually lasts for 8 months or more. The annual precipitation for this region is between 20 - 50 in. per year. The annual temperature can extend from -20 - 40° C
Tall-grassland Prairie Climate:
The tall-grass land prairie has a climate that is moist and humid, this allows the grasses in this biome to grow up to a height of 10 ft. Winters in the tall-grassland prairies are cold, but overall not severe. In the Summer, the climate in this biome is very warm and humid. The annual precipitation is about 25 - 36 in. per year. The average temperature ranges from -5 - 20° C.
Short-grassland Prairie Climate:
The climate in the short-grassland prairie is very dry and humid due to the moisture from the pacific being blocked by the rocky mountains. In this area of the world there are no natural barriers that block the wind, therefore making the short-grasslands a place with constant winds. In the short-grasslands the grasses have adapted long root systems that keep them and the soil from being pulled away by animals and the wind. The annual precipitation and temperature for the short-grassland prairie is similar to the tall-grassland. The only difference is the latitude and longitude of where the biome is located.
Pampas-grasslands:
The Pampas have a climate that is moist due to it's tropical atmosphere all year long. Here is this grassland there are a large variety of tall grasses that prosper all year. The annual precipitation of this grassland is 40.8 - 60.8 in. per year. In this region of Argentina the average temperature of the pampas is 23.3 - 45° throughout the year.
Steppe-grasslands:
The steppe grasslands have a cold dry climate throughout the winter and a very hot dry climate in the summer. Due to the Himalaya Mountains preventing warm moist air from the Indian Ocean entering this region, there is little precipitation. In the winter, the arctic winds are not blocked of from the the steppe grasslands, leading to it to be very cold and windy. The temperatures of the steppe have been recorded to be up to -40 - 40° C. The annual precipitation in the Steppe-grasslands is 10 - 20 in. per year.
